A colleague of mine related the following to me..
Lets call him Bolt. I cannot understand why since Usain Bolt was not even famous a dozen years ago.
It was that time of the year when our bosses apprise our performance for the past year.

In fact, many were very impressed with your work attitude, your endless contribution and the countless hours of OT that you put in over the past year. We were also very grateful to you for your extraordinary vision and how you dipped into your savings to steer this company through the recent financial crisis. This company is forever grateful to you but....

Bolt : *Sniff. But Boss, M.C never did put in a day of OT over the past year and had no contribution to show for the entire year. He hasnt even closed a single deal for the entire year!!! *Sniff

Boss: Bolt, i understand. But M.C has promised to put in alot more effort in the coming year and has agreed that he will use half his pay to buy supplies for the pantry...As such, i would like to see what he can do. I mean.. i would like to have an alternative if you decide to quit this company. He does sound very promising despite his inactivity since employment...

The last time i seen such an euphoria state of affairs was back in 2004. That happened not long after i discovered the world of Bulls and Bears.

Every IPO shot to the sky. Uncles and aunties were all excited about each IPO because they were money making opportunities. Back then, i stuck with counters like ACCS, Hiap Seng, ST Eng and even had some DBS. I was in for the long haul....i thought.

A decade later, i realise that your friends are not ones who can withstand shocks but those who make you the most money. These friendships are shortlive and its almost appropriate to say that you use each other for gains.

The market is a cycle. The folks who makes the most money within the shortest time are usually the biggest winners. The ones who gets left behind most prob got their CDP account over the past year or so... Ho Ho Hoo..

Just in case anyone thinks that the stock market is a fantastic place to be..

Yes, its indeed fun and exciting to see your counters rise by a couple of percentage points a day. But seriously... how much gain do you make? Is it really good money?

Assuming the average investor have 5 lots of ABC shares that cost $1. For it to rise 20% over the course of 6 months would yield you $1.2 and $1000 profit. IS that alot?

The more experienced folks would most prob have 30 lots of ABC shares that cost $1. After 6 months, its a tidy $6000 profit. Its good money and it gets you and your family a nice holiday in europe. However, the reverse is also true. In 6 months, you can lose 50% of your orignal capital. Thats a Whopping $15000.

So what? Dare you play big? Or contemplate with small punts? Most of us are better off concentrating on our daily jobs, really.

I havent seen the official timing but i reckoned i lost to the 40 year old oldman.
Im gutted. Serious. At 30, im a decade younger and in the prime of my running career. After a detailed analysis of my race while facebooking with my friends earlier... im offering the following as an explanation of the very poor run.

1) The very new and heavy asics shoes.
Compared to my previous NB shoes.. they weigh a ton. ~~But alas, i never did run this fast in those NB shoes...~~

2) The Ba Kut Teh and Sushi dinner i had yesterday.
I was told to carbo load. The very smart me figure that what better way to carbo load than to eat rice... lots of it and i topped it off with fatty chunks of pork ribs and fatty salmon sashimi.

3) The Bonjour Bread breakfast.
Told joyce to buy gardenia liao. Enough said.

4) H TWO O.
Told joyce to buy 100 plus (which incidentally is the official sports drink for AHM) but she brough H TWO O. Enough Said.

5) Picking up PKH.
PKH needed a lift.. and that extra ounce of energy to drive to his house could have cost me my race.

Oh well... Old Man, see you at SCM. I'll quit running if i lose again. Humph!

Just the other day, there were lots of confusion over the closure of the JE station over the weekend to facilitate expansion works. This was so even after numerous reminders and announcements across all media.

So they did more. How much more is enough?

Surely, LTA is not going to distribute flyers to all the residents in Singapore and that 1000 residents of JE arent the only folks who used the station.
Frankly, resources should be channelled to the right places and not wasted this way.

But seriously...
Is it going to change the world?

There is one childish pastor trying to seek attention. The world is his circus and we are his audience.
The real damage is being done as these 'whose who' comes forward and condemn the act.

Surely, Islam is more than the Quran and Christianity is more than this pastor.

Just the other day, i saw a motorcyclist roll in front of me on SLE while i was driving at 100km/h. Its a good thing that i was about 50m behind.

Singapore laws states that the drivers would always be in the wrong in accidents involving motorcyclist and pedestrians. Its a matter of time before i get a on board videocam to safeguard my interest.

Not too long ago, my office added internet terminals for everyone.
This is a huge step forward since i am now able to surf Facebook full time... anytime. =)

With the emergence of the internet corners... i started to notice that alot of my colleagues are stock traders. Sometimes, i even feel ashame of myself becoz the only webpage i visit consistently is www.facebook.com instead of www.poems.com.sg.

There was once 2 friends who each started a renovation company.

Friend A was a very creative person and soon his business started to make big money. He advertised on Renotalk and soon, all the newly wed in Singapore was looking for him to renovate their new house.

His company grew and grew.

Soon... his company couldnt heck it and he had to hire Malaysian and Chinese from Mainland China to keep up the demand. His profit grew and grew. Soon, he was making about 10 million a year just by renovating houses.

Friend B wasnt that creative. He was a decent renovator but was never as good as Friend A. His business was slow and his team of 10 lowly educated Singaporeans were enough to meet the company's demand.

But..

SAF demanded only renovators that are Singapore citizen.

Friend B now makes 100million a year.... with SAF as its only client.

Police statement on probe into CHC members - Asia One News.

The Office of the Commissioner of Charities (COC) and the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) have commenced investigations into some financial transactions involving several individuals and companies, related or connected to the City Harvest Church.

The COC received complaints of misuse of church funds and informed the CAD, when it assessed that some of these financial transactions may need to be investigated by the CAD.

CAD officers visited the offices of the individuals and the companies under investigation this morning and have secured records and accounts for the purpose of the investigations.

Last evening while lying in bed, i commented to joyce that i might have pneumonia. This, of course is not true. I just ran 21km on Saturday evening and was feeling fantastic on sunday morning. Cancer was most prob a more probable cause of concern than pneumonia.

But i was indeed feeling pain in my chest since Saturday evening. At the back of my mind, i even wonder if i had broke some ribs while trying to gasp for breath trying to finish the 21km.

Feeling these pain in my chest can be amusing until you realise the uncanny timing that all these is happening.

Oh well, it will most prob go away in a couple of days.

Fresh off the Sundown Marathon...

1) If you are running a 21km race and starts to pant at the 2km mark.... You are not going to win the race. Dont look at me. Its not me.

2) If you approach the halfway point and see the top runner across the street... DO not for one second think that you will be able to catch up.
Why?
If you are 1km from the turning point, this means that the top runner is 2km away.
If you are 2km away from the turning point, this means that the top runner is 4km away.
No respectful competitor will let his fellow competitor drift so far ahead of him.

3) If you find yourself enjoying the run at 10km mark... this means you aint going to win the race either. You started too slowly and even if you push for the rest of the race, you will end up way off the mark.

4) Always remember to bring a watch.

I brought the pics back to office and showed it to my boss..

He blew his top and told me that his idea of a happy family pic is the father and daughter locked in a passionate hug and kiss. In fact, he told me that a even better shot would be for the kid and father to snuggle up together, look at the camera and smile. He told me the only thing that i should be worried is to get the kid to look at the camera.

My boss and me obviously have different ideas on how this will turn out.

I used to have a colleague who can be classified as a Chao Keng Kia. Lets call him Soulman for short.

Hes CK because hes not around half the time... and the other half of the time, hes away on childsick leave.
Being the very true blue fighting soldier that i once was... hes was everything that i didnt want to be.

Recently, our path crossed again. I had to do an interview for my new company for SAF. SAF is apparently revamping its image and would like to do a series of shoot for publicity. As luck would have it, the interviewee turned out to be Soulman.

I only had about 30mins with him but it put to rest my previous misconceptions about him. From the moment i stepped into his house till i left, i could feel through my veins the family vibes that resonance between himself and his family.

It became clear that work was perhaps never his 1st priority. His family was.

Suddenly, i feel ashame of myself. I never did understood him previously because i never saw this sight of him.

And i thought i knew the meaning of what 'family ties'.. Looks like i have a lot to learn.

Its quite sad because this does not auger well for the good clean image of Singapore. Loads of stationary taxis with their engine fumes only contribute to pollution.

The actual tangible income is most prob lesser once you consider the amount of fuel wasted during the wait and the opportunity cost of ferrying more customers during the wait time.

SO WHAT ARE THE TAXI COMPANIES THINKING?

When i buy enough shares in COMFORT...i'll answer that.

In the meantime, i'll offer you an out of the box solution to the lack of taxis in MBS, RWS and wherever else that needs surcharge.

1) Making parking free.

Not many people know this but at one point of time, i was a huge huge soccer fan.

I watched the Singapore Lions got relegated to the then Malaysian Div 2. My heart ached too when Lim Tong Hai scored 2 own goals to send Singapore out of the then SEA Games.

Till now, i cannot ascertain if it was Lim Tong Hai who kelong or David Lee who kelong.
Why? Because the 2nd own goal...i couldnt score even if i tried. How more can a defender who is trying to clear his line from 40 yards out score?!
Nevermind, i digress.

Anyone remember Bohan? That poor fella who left soccer to study in UK died at the young age of 30++. He featured prominently in in the squad of 94.

And then, there was the EPL.

I was mighty proud when i was handed the No.6 jersey for my school team. Gary Pallister who incidentally together with Steve Bruce formed one of the most reliable central defence ever.. One of my earliest memories of the EPL was when Steve Bruce tried to score a goal in a goalmouth melee and got himself a bloodied head instead. The TV zoomed in on his broken head and i almost sworn off EPL...

Then there was the Ryan Giggs soccer show. He was young, handsome and very talented. So much so that they devoted 30mins each week to him on TV. He would sashay his moves on TV every sun nite and i would remember many of my friends trying to copy his moves the following day.

Other than his tricks, i remember his receeding hairline the best. FOr someone who is 18, he does have very little hair. I remember muttering to myself that someday he would be bald.
~~th be told.. he is bald now. All you folks who think that he has slowed over the years.. BULLSHIT. Hes wearing a wig and if he run too fast, the wig will fall off~~

So why did i stop soccer altogether? Because starhub came around and took it all away. It used to be 2 matches a week.. then it was one match on saturday nite. And then it became a delayed match on sun afternoon. Subsequently, it was just the highlights.. and then they stopped it altogether.

Boredom has gotten the better of me.. I contemplated looking at more lifestyle magazines to get more ideas for the house but figured i better wait for joyce's opinions.

What i did instead was to spend time looking at Citigroup's chart.

Interestingly, if everything goes well... Plausible selling points are at $10 and $20. Its sitting pretty at about $4+ now.

The caveat are that support sits at ~$2.50.

If you indeed got time and money, Citigroup might just be your ticket to becoming a millionaire. =)

While seeping my coffee and surfing net yesterday at my ex office (yes, they have finally increase the number of internet terminals to a grand total of 4), a friend of mine (lets call him Seagull) asked me to help him check on Citigroup on Dow Jones.

I told him its worth $2.
He replied that if its $2, he would borrow money to buy lots of Citigroup shares.

I hope his dream would come true soon and that he will approach me instead of the bank to lend him money.

As i continue to seep my coffee in the corner of my pantry, i cant help but overhear a conversation between my ex-boss and a ex colleague..

Lets call them Fido and Drama to protect their identity.

I cant help but think to myself..
While the gesture of treating lunch is a good one.. why impose the additional caveat? Its like, im donating money to the poor but demand that the charity only help the poorest and the most pitiful, if not, im going to report them to CPIB and accuse them of mis-using my donation.

The analogy is not entirely accurate but the underlying reasoning is a very simple one..

Just the other day, i was back in camp for ICT and it coincided with a annual exercise between the nations in the region.

As i seep coffee from an isolated corner in pantry, i couldnt help but notice the numerous shoutings and profanities that was originating from a corner of the office.
Surprisingly, the shoutings seems to be targetted a a pool of middle level management personnel who had been 'contributing' significantly over the past few years. These very same folks are expected to carry on their shoulders, the aspiration of my ex bosses in the years ahead.

But yet, they didnt seem to be able to do anythign right....

It got so bad that a very senior chap commented loudly...' I dont know if its the attitude of the people'

The frank truth may very well be the rubberband attitude of the management. Dont get me wrong, i dont work there anymore and i dont bear no grudges against the management. But when the management selectively train people that they like and qualify trainees based on manpower requirement.. it was always going to be tough for the future generations.

i guess, if im sitting high and mighty up in the hierarchy today, the big fat 5 digit paycheck each month would more or less make up for these blunders.

I was out lunching with a friend yesterday and he was asking me if i brought shares from Citibank.

He went on tell me about how it was easy money because its share price are increasing daily.

The conversation then went on to how the Singapore market does not give as good a return as the US markets because the share prices dont rise as fast.... i guess hes rite to a certain extent since the movt in the local market hovers between a 1/2 a cent and 1 cent.

How long would it take to make $1000 dollar from a 1/2 cent movt???? For most of use, its going to take months, if not years.

For a few lucky individuals, it takes a lot shorter since their big fat thick wallet allow them to hold 5 million shares...

Oh well, i'm going to bank on the big sweep next month. I might just get lucky.

2. All these bags carried by children, while adults carry nothing.
I used to remember carrying a ton of books to school. It was partly my fault that i dont pack my bags.. but also partly because i didnt know how to read the timetable. I only started packing my bags in primary 4.

About a month back, a scene just outside my house struck me..
A maid and a ~~spoilt brat~~ girl was crossing the street. The girl, no older than primary 6 ran across the road. Upon reaching the other side, she turned around and threw a disgusting look at the maid for not keeping up with her...

I hope she grow up to be a ah lian and sleep around.

4. Wearing shorts in winter
This has no explicit reason to it... i just enjoy the coldness rather than being hot and sweaty.

8. Education: All "Smiles" and "Thank you"
About a decade ago, the Singapore govt started advocating financial education. Students were encourage to start small unrealistic unsustainable business in school canteens and bookshops to cultivate a sense of financial well being.

All it did was to encourage materialistic upbringing. We will see the repercussions in years to come.

10. All the holidays Chinese people don't celebrate - Japanese kindergartens celebrate
How many of you go pay respect to your elders on qing ming? Do you know that praying should be done in the early morning?
Maybe some of today's kids who would grow up to be very successful businessman and women would pay their maids to go pray on their behalf in time to come. All thanks to the very successful financial education.

11. Teachers' abilities
Why do we need so many teachers who sleeps around with students ? We have more teachers than ever today.... it was so to justify a better Teacher to Student ratio. We have achieved that... but it corresponded with a decrease in the quality of the students.

12. Buddhist Influences

We shouldnt discuss this on this blog... but im glad my parents are buddhist. =)

If i ever have kids, i think they are going to suffer.

Dear all,

Im almost afraid to say this but for all the trouble that i had to go through to get married... i thoroughly enjoyed the experience.It was one year of running all around to get everything in place.. and now that its over, i kind of miss having it all the time at the back of my mind.

I cant write beautiful stuffs. Sometimes, the words comes out wrong... So i copy..

I've just been reflecting over the past week and one thing has been foremost in my mind. As a civil servant and a member of the Republic of Singapore Armed Forces, I believe that my duty is firstly to the constitution and the Republic of Singapore. Other elected public officials from the clerk at a government office's desk are essentially that, public servants and duty bound to serve the country and its citizens, particularly those servants who are elected by the people of a country to serve them.

Now I can totally understand according proper respect and privileges to those commensurate with the responsibility they shoulder and provide them with an appropriate level of conduciveness to conduct their duties. However, it perturbs me when people start blurring that line with over enthusiasm bordering on fawning and subservience, or to use a more common S'porean term, sar kar. I really wonder whether sometimes power does change people and prompt them to expect something beyond the obligation and duty of their subordinate or fellow public servants.

I really hope that I never become such a person in future and should I ever turn into one who expects people to fawn over me and bow and scrape to kiss the ground I walk on, I hope my friends who see this kick me in the balls and bring me back to Earth. After all I am not a monarch and as a citizen of a Republic with a democratically elected government, I certainly hope we never see any behavior more associated with royalty of a monarchy than a democratic country. And should we encounter such crap in future, we better stiffen up and remember the SAF creed or Officer's creed which I believe includes a line about serving my country, not a person but a country!!! - Cheng Heng Eng

Joyce told me to throw in the towel if the going gets too tough ~~she will support me, financially~~ but i figure.. all is not lost. Not yet at least.

The 15th day of the lunar new year is about to draw to a close.. and my worst fears has already come true.

About 2 years ago, i discovered a lump in my head. Prognosis from doctors was that it was cancerous and it had to be removed. The tricky part was that it was inside my head. It took months for the doctors to come up with a plan to remove it and it took several more months before i was given the all clear.

About a few days back, i notice a lump growing again on my head. The initial prognosis aint good.

To escape death one time, i consider myself lucky. To cheat death the 2nd time, it would take nothing less than a miracle.

Am about to go to bed and figured this is a good time to spend a few moments to write about the year ahead.
I know this is a little late in the making... but better late than never.

2008 and 2009 were years to forget. I hardly got anything right... BUT it wasnt as bad as it could have been and im thankful for it. In fact, i thought the experiences gave me a new conviction to tweak the way that i have been working on certain things.

If 2008 and 2009 had been bad... then if 2010 continues to be bad, i would have achieve the impossible of 3 bad and lousy years in a row. BUT.. im not about to go there..

Im going to assume that i have paid my dues and that things would finally get better. Much better. In fact, im looking forward to spending more time with joyce (much more than ever), a new home, holidays and finding finally not being held ransom by work anymore.

Moving on to the financial front, 2010.. can be summed up in one statement.
There are increasing number of people indulging in the fruits of happiness provided by the stock market. 2009 provided ample opportunities for alot of my friends to make handsome profits.. Im sure 2010 would be the same if they find themselves some happy counters.

For myself, my balls has shrunk considerably over the years... I no long thrive on the high of making 1/2 a cent per counter, it just aint worth it to take so much risk to make that 1/2 a cent. For the past 2 years, i have been caught out one too many times.

In 2010, it would be no different... in fact, to change my luck... im buying myself a solid gold ROLEX. =) You should too.

Not too long ago, i aspired to be a wedding photographer. But after going at it for about 6 months, i was so disheartened by the prevailing H~~alf~~F~~uck~~ industry standard that i swore never to do another wedding.

Folks that was charging 2K was mostly pretenders and i was badly affected by it (i mean i was earning peanuts and the hours were looong loong loooooooooooong).

Once in a while, i still get calls to do weddings... but i tend to push them to acquaintances that i befriended with during my stint as a WPG and if i cant... i would just brush them off by tell them that i already have a booking.

So it was a little surprising that i took up an assignment readily recently. Best part is... its a Indian wedding. Well done, Mr HF part time WPG. I wanna see you get urself into trouble. Ha ha ha...

I finally got myself some time off this afternoon... Besides sleeping, i started watching the tons of videos i ~~downloaded~~ brought earlier.

Sieving through the tons of videos, i found 'The Secret Millionaire'.

Its a cheesy, B grade reality show in which millionaires hide their identity and work undercover as volunteers to both get a taste of 'poor' life and also to find potential targets that they can help.
The aim is to give some money at the end of the show to make all things good and nice..

As much as i try to deny it.. the show actually almost brought tears to my eyes when i watched the ending. The gratitude from the eyes of those in need.. phew...

I dont have a million dollars to give away... but i do 20cents donation every now and then... and i hope that they make a difference to the few people they helped.

The Chinese New Year is coming... have you done a good deed recently?

While i wait for the multi million airline industry (facebook) to come back online...
i shall blog about work.

I know of this colleague who has great potential to go very far in my work place. He is much younger than me but in terms of achievements, he is just about a step behind. Lets call him... 'Mr Serial'.

In the organisation's anxiety to develop him, the organisation has forced upon him to undergo training that he did not wish to do, trips that he did not want to go and utlimately deprive him of his family time.

Dealing directly with him is his immediate boss. Lets call him 'Mr Neck tie'. Mr Neck Tie is someone who sings the same tune with the organisation. Back in my NS days, this is what i call, Old School Soldier. Someone who execute orders to the 'T' but lacks very much the human touch. His views are restricted to what be believes is good for the organisation.

Heres the prob...

Each and everyone of us have different priorities in different phases of our lives. At one stage of my life, i thought it was appropriate to put work in the driving seat.. but now that i earn close to 30K a month, theres hardly incentive to drive myself any harder.

Same goes for Mr Serial. The organisation forced upon him to undertake tasks that he didnt like. Now this is not a very big prob since most of us falls into this category anyway... But in recent time, forced him to go on a month long business trip while he was preparing for a very important phase of his life. Mr Neck Tie obviously didnt want to hear any of Mr Serial's reasoning.

Im going to assume that all of you understand what he has gone through but i assure you... you would not. You would not because you do not know how difficult it is to not be around for your family because you have no choice but to put work ahead of them.

When we were young and have less obligations, its easy to adjust our time to conform to our work commitments. Not anymore.

I shall not go at lengths on why family is important.. if you do not already know, theres is no need for you to ever know then. Someday, when you are caught in a siatuation when your family demands for your attention and you cant let work down, drop me a message and tell me which one you are going to choose.

When he comes out, make him the ambassador for religious harmony. Surely, you dont have to be pulled aside for such chats before realising that you are threading on thin ice.

Seriously...
Whats the point? How about reminding us to eat healthy, exercise regularly and take our vitamins so that we dont need to rely on our medisave (or was it medishield.. or whatever else it was) when we are sick because it was never going to be enough.
