Post No. 59
Once a year... I will do something really silly.
WHY WOULD ANYONE WANNA RUN 42.195km at one go?
It started out innocent enough about 3 years back when i helped out in standard chartered marathon 2003.
I was stationed near the end point. From the moment the 1st runner came in to the last runner that i saw (~7hr++) limping in, i told myself...someday, i would run a marathon, juz like these big boys.
I was never a good runner but i've always enjoyed running. In fact, i sucked at running. My sec one 2.4km timing was a good 14++ minutes! It was good only for a bronze. Darn... When i was in poly, my best timing was 10mins and 40 secs. The magical 9 mins has always eluded me. (I wanna be like the big boys..)
When i went into army, all the rushing and marching did me good. FOr once, i was able to run 9++ mins. BUt then, the big boys was running 8++ mins.
Running gives me time off to think about life. Running should always be done in isolation. Oh yes, buddies are fun and absolutely essential when the going gets tough.. But on those loong long training runs, its best done alone. Alone becoz while your body struggle physically with each steps, your brain remains clear and focused.
Last year, i ran a marathon. I ran becoz i wanna be like the big boys. I ran becoz people around me dont run marathons. I wanna be different. I ran becoz my friends gave me countless excuses to not join me and i wanna prove them all wrong.
This year, i ran becoz poi wanted to run. Im not exactly sure how serious he was about running when he first mention it back in July. But i guess if he backs out, i'll just be $30 poorer and noone would probably say i chickened out since i ran last year. When was the last time you ran 4.2km??
And so off i ran...
I love running. Catch me if you can...
I look silly but...
Oh well, next year.. I will run becoz im addicted. But if i dun, no one would say i chickened out. I've ran in 2 marathons. Im with the big boys now.
And yes, hes retiring after close to 700km and 2 marathons. My first 'real' jogging shoes.
HAve fun. See you at Singapore Marathon 2006.
